THIS STARTED WITH $1.2 MILLION.
LINDSAY CLANCY GOT $1.2 MILLION WORTH OF SYMPATHY.
LET'S SEE WHAT CONTEMPT IS WORTH.
Lindsay Clancy killed her three children.
Somehow, the story that followed resulted in a fundraiser for her parents collecting approximately $1.2 million.
I find that revolting.
Not the existence of crowdfunding. Not that strangers sometimes help families going through horrific circumstances.
WHAT I OBJECT TO:
The extraordinary financial support surrounding Lindsay Clancy.
I don't sympathise with her. I don't think she deserves to emerge from this story as somebody the internet should rally around. And I apparently wasn't alone in looking at that enormous pile of money and wondering what the hell had happened.
So I created a GoFundMe specifically to mock it.
The premise was deliberately ridiculous:
THE EXPERIMENT
If people can raise $1.2 million in financial support surrounding Lindsay Clancy, can people who are disgusted by what she did raise even more for something completely pointless?
NO.There would be no deserving recipient.
NO.No carefully manufactured reason why I need your money.
SO WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
I'D JUST KEEP IT.
That was the joke.
The stupidity was intentional.
The comparison was intentional.
And everybody donating would know exactly where their money was going.
GUFUNDME
GOFUNDME DIDN'T FIND IT
AS FUNNY AS I DID.
They removed it.

SO I APPEALED.

They rejected that too.
EXHIBIT B
Which creates a rather wonderful situation.
THE FUNDRAISER THAT INSPIRED THIS

THE PARODY MOCKING IT

REMOVED
The fundraiser that made me create the parody in the first place was allowed to collect roughly $1.2 million.
The parody designed to ridicule that fact wasn't allowed to collect anything.
Fine.
WE'LL DO IT WITHOUT GOFUNDME.
This website is the original experiment, continued.
Lindsay's side of this utterly ridiculous scoreboard starts with approximately:
FOR COMPLETE CLARITY
Every penny raised here goes to me personally.
I'm not going to manufacture a justification for that because doing so would defeat the entire point.
I'll spend it on stupid things. Games. Food. Something needlessly expensive that I can put on this website beneath the heading “LOOK WHAT YOU PEOPLE HAVE DONE.”
Maybe we'll vote on particularly idiotic purchases.
Maybe this raises £37 and quietly dies.
Maybe the internet does what the internet occasionally does and this gets completely out of control.
Either result answers the question.
